Afternoon classroom energiser

Shuttle ball

Duration: 20 minutes

Equipment: 1 netball per team, markers or tape to identify 2 lines about 3 metres apart

How to play: Play in groups of 3. A ball is thrown to a catcher. The thrower runs to take the place of the catcher and the catcher in turn runs to join players at the thrower’s line.

  • Player 1 throws the ball to Player 2 and then runs to Line B.

  • Player 2 throws the ball to Player 3 and then runs to Line A.

  • Repeat this pattern until the ‘stop’ signal is given.

  • Introduce different passes (for example, chest pass, one-handed lob pass, bounce pass, shoulder pass).

Middle session classroom energiser

Caterpillar run

Duration: 15 minutes

Equipment: 1 or 2 netballs per team

**Leading — sprinting strongly to the ball, either directly forward or diagonally to the free space (away from the defender/opponent). The emphasis should be on the first 3 or 4 steps.

How to play: In small groups players pass a netball in a zigzag pattern to progress the group up the court. Play in groups of 6 to 8.

  • Form pairs, then groups of 6 to 8 with one ball per group. (Depending on participant numbers the game can also be played in several smaller groups).

  • Players stand opposite their partner about 1 to 1.5 metres apart.

  • The ball starts at the beginning of one line.

  • On your signal, the first player passes the ball to their partner, as their partner is moving to the free space on the line (leading).

  • After passing the ball the first player runs to the end of their line.

  • The player now holding the ball passes it diagonally opposite to the next player leading for it, then they run to the end of their line.

  • Passing continues until the group has made it to the end of the court (or designated area).

  • Players can race against the clock or against other groups.

  • Add an extra ball to increase the pace of the activity.

Afternoon classroom energiser

Marker dodge

Duration: 15 minutes

Equipment: 25 cones (mixed colours)

How to play: Players practise changing directions and awareness of others through a course.

  • Place 4 to 6 markers of each colour in one third of the court.

  • Organise players into groups of 2 to 4 and allocate them a colour.

  • The first player from each group moves into the area and dodges each time they reach their coloured marker.

  • On teacher's call, or after a set number of dodges, the player returns to their line and the next player starts the activity.

Tag pass

Duration: 15 minutes

Equipment: 1 netball per game, bibs or sashes to identify team

How to play: Players are split into 2 teams of passers and dodgers. The attackers (passers) aim to pass the netball to each other and tag the dodgers with the ball. Play in teams of 8 to 10.

  • Organise players into 2 teams of passers and dodgers.

  • Within the playing area, the passers aim to pass the ball to each other and tag the dodgers with the ball.

  • A tag is made when the passer uses the ball to touch the player (the ball is not to be thrown).

  • Netta rules apply, whereby passers cannot move with the ball.

  • Once tagged, dodgers join the passing team. The aim is to tag everyone. .

Recognising student achievement during the Challenge

Providing regular acknowledgment and recognition of students will help keep motivation high throughout the 10 weeks. Ways you could facilitate this:

  • weekly acknowledgement at morning assemblies highlighting individual and class achievements

  • presenting mid-Challenge Achievement and Encouragement certificates

  • celebrating student effort through a special ceremony when handing out award certificate at the end of the 10 weeks.

Remember to acknowledge improvement and participation, not just the achievement of diamond awards.

Provide students with time to log and record their active minutes

Visit the '10wC resources and support' page on the School Sport Unit website to access support on how students to log and record active minutes.
