The mandatory topic for the Preliminary course is Music 1600-1900 (sometimes named Western tonal tradition 1600-1900). This topic covers the common-practice period of Western art music, chiefly the Baroque, Classical, and Romantic eras.

Includes the Romantic era (c. 1800-1910) and the beginning of Modernist and Impressionist movements.
The common-practice period was predated by early music, comprising Medieval music (c. 500-1400) and Renaissance music (c. 1400-1600).
In the late 19th century and 20th century, new musical movements such as Modernism, Impressionism, Neoclassicism, Expressionism and Postmodernism arose. These can be studied as part of the additional topics: Music 1900-1945 and Music 1945-music 25 years ago.
