A clef is a musical symbol placed at the beginning of a staff to indicate the pitch of written notes. Clefs assign a particular note value to one of the lines on the staff, setting the reference point for all other notes.
The most common clefs are the treble clef (G clef), which is often used for higher-pitched instruments and voices, and the bass clef (F clef), used for lower-pitched instruments and voices. The alto and tenor clefs (C clef) cater to mid-range instruments.
This printout gives an overview of the main types of clefs you are likely to encounter in Music 2.
