An audit is a way of finding out about something, or checking if someone is doing something correctly. Some examples are,
- a method to check someone is doing the right thing (like an audit of someone's tax documents and receipts)
- a way to find out about how much we use of something (like an audit of electricity usage)
- a way to find out how much and what types of waste a group are producing (a waste audit)
Can you think of any other types of audits?
The next step in our journey is to have a practice of running an audit. You are going to audit the items that are on your bedroom floor. Some of you may have a really easy job of this and others may take all day!
The first thing you need to do is head to your bedroom. If you share your bedroom with someone you may need to check in with them first. If they don't want you to touch anything of theirs, that's OK, just audit your own things.
The idea of an audit is that you need to count all the items on your bedroom floor and record them in an organised way. Grouping items is the best way to do this. You might count how many items of clothes are on your floor - maybe dividing them into clean clothes that need to get put away and dirty clothes that need to go in the washing. Then you might count how many books, how many soft toys, how many pieces of lego or how many cars are on your floor. Lastly you might count how many pieces of rubbish are on your floor - and then divide them into things you can recycle (like paper) and things that you can't (like broken plastic). If you have some things that are hard to group, you could always just put them under a list for 'other things' and keep a list of what goes in that group.
A really great idea is to put the things in their correct place as you count them! That way you will end up with a tidy bedroom at the end of the activity :)
If your floor is super clean (well done!) then maybe you could audit the things on your desk, or even the things in your pencil case.
Record your results on the PDF below , or just on a piece of paper.
What was the most and least common item found on your bedroom floor?
Can you think of three ways you could organise yourself so that less things were left on your bedroom floor?
Do you think you could trial one of these suggestions and then audit your room again in a week's time and see if you have improved?
