Welcome to all you waste warriors out there! Well done on embarking on the worthy challenge of reducing the waste that you send to landfill from your household.
This first lesson allows you to tune into the topic by watching a few video clips. Then it's time to create a waste warrior name for yourself - one that will make everyone want to join you on your waste reducing journey!
It is time to start asking yourself some of these questions -
Do I think my household creates too much waste?
Do I think this is a problem?
What is one thing I already know I could do at my place to reduce the waste we send to landfill?
Skip ahead to Lesson 2 at any point if you would like to find out more about what landfill is, what you can and can't recycle, or to find out more about composting and FOGO.
Take a look at this Vimeo clip that shows five of the Bega Valley Shire Council's schools taking on the waste challenge. Watch them auditing their playground rubbish and creating action plans to make change at their schools.
Take note of their waste warrior names as it will help in the task below.
View this YouTube clip that gives an entertaining way to introduce the idea that we really don't need to use single use plastic in our day. See how simple some of the solutions are - often things we already know about and even own at home.
Are you ready to break up with single use plastic?
Ever wondered where a plastic bag ends up when it blows away? Or a chip packet, or any soft plastic we use.
Ever thought about how much soft plastic ends up floating around our playgrounds, roads and waterways?
Watch this Vimeo clip and take a journey through the life cycle of one adventurous plastic bag...
This YouTube clip takes you on an amazing journey. It starts with the decision of just one individual who decided to make a difference by cleaning up an enormous amount of rubbish on a beach in Mumbai. Thousands of volunteers joined in the massive effort.
Just see what happens when the beach is clean of rubbish again!
Now it's time to give yourself a great waste warrior name!
It's a pretty good way to start your journey and it will help to get everyone at home interested in what you are doing.
Have a look at the PDF file below to get your ideas flowing and make sure you share your name with others once you have decided.
Have a think about the rubbish that you create in your home.
Do you have lots of waste in your landfill bin?
What things are going into your landfill bin that shouldn't be?
Do some members of your family sort their waste and others not?
Do you have FOGO at your house and does everybody use it?
Are you really good waste sorters, but perhaps you still have heaps of soft plastics that end up in the red bin?
Is your bathroom full of plastic, or do you use bamboo toothbrushes and shampoo bars?
Come up with one thing you already know that you could do better at your house, to reduce the amount of waste that goes to landfill.
