SCAMPER is based on the notion that everything new is a modification of something that already exists. Each letter in the acronym represents a different way you can play with the characteristics of what is challenging you to trigger new ideas:
S = Substitute, C = Combine, A = Adapt, M = Magnify, P = Put to Other Uses, E = Eliminate (or Minify), R = Rearrange (or Reverse)

This design strategy is referred to as ‘Inversion’. This technique involves turning the problem around and looking at it in a completely different way.
Think of all the different ways you can solve the problem?
Look at it from different perspectives, the needs of the consumer, the user and the manufacturer. The following link provides more information on the process of inversion. https://jamesclear.com/inversion
This sheet shows a designer using the Inversion technique to generate a range of ideas for filling up a vessel with water.
This design strategy is called, ‘Morphological Analysis’
This is a way of developing new ideas by using lists to analyse existing products. It tends to provide a large range of ideas.
This is how it works:
List the attributes or features of a product for example a toothbrush – power supply, head shape, material, style, target audience etc.
Draw a table with the attributes forming the headings of each column
Write down as many variables of each attribute as you can think of (this can be completed by the students suggesting variables) – see example opposite for a light source
Select one entry from each column to generate a new idea for a product.
Repeat several times with different combinations
A mood board (or inspiration board) is a physical or digital collage of ideas that are commonly used in fields like interior design, fashion, and graphic design.
In fact, more than just a collection of engaging pictures, mood boards serve as a fundamental transition between an initial thought and a first draft. It may be more beneficial to think of mood boarding as visual organizing.
A mind map shows the different ideas associated with a particular concept. It is a useful tool for brainstorming. The concept is usually shown in the middle as a central idea that branches off in different directions. So, what is mind mapping? It’s simply the process of creating mind maps. Mind mapping involves brainstorming to document the relationships of information based on a single concept, then placing those ideas onto the mind map itself.
