Our subject selections are based on student choice each year rather than minimum numbers.
These subject choices are considered as to the best fit on the timetable, with the objective to run the best combination of subjects that provides the majority of our students with their priority choices.
It is important that students select the subjects they wish to study in order of their preference to ensure their vote clearly contributes towards those subjects.

It is uncommon that we are not able to provide students with a pattern of study based on their primary and reserve selections.
However, it is worthwhile knowing which subjects you may also be interested in studying. In the event we can't provide a student with one of their three reserve choices, we will speak with them about possible options.

English is currently the only compulsory subject for the award of the Higher School Certificate.
At Gymea, Mathematics is chosen by an overwhelming majority of our students every year, meaning there is no other subject that will fall on the same line as it in Year 11.
Be mindful that some University's such as Sydney University, have also reintroduced Mathematics as a pre-requisite for study of a range of their courses.
Student's who perform well in English or Mathematics Advanced are those who have previously demonstrated the skills required to achieve strong success in these courses. This includes a strong commitment and application to their studies in the classroom and at home.
Student's should select the level that is best suited to them and ensure they work towards their best possible result in that course.
Selecting a course because it's perceived to "scale well" often does not produce strong results. Scaling only benefits those students who perform strongly in that course to begin with.
