Subject Selection
On this page you will find information and links to help you and your child to make informed decisions regarding subject selection for Stage 5 (Y9/10) and Stage 6 (Y11/12).
GPHS SUBJECT SELECTION SITE
This site will become active on June 2oth 2024. Students and parents will not be able to access it before then. Once active, you'll find a list of all the subjects your child can choose from when going into Y9 or Y11, as well as a detailed description of each subject. It is always recommended that students speak to current faculty teachers and faculty head teachers if they wish to gain a better understanding of the subjects they are considering.
CREATE A PERSONAL JOBJUMP ACCOUNT
The JobJump website provides a wealth of information that can help you make decisions that support your future plans. Whether your destination is university, TAFE, or you want to go straight into full-time work when you leave school, JobJump covers it all. All GPHS students, parents and carers have access to JobJump via our school subscription. View the video below to see how JobJump can help with subject selection, and follow this link to find instructions about how to create your JobJump account if you haven't already signed-up.
EXTERNAL DELIVERED VOCATIONAL EDUCATION & TRAINING (EVET)
GPHS students have the option to complete an additional qualification as part of their ROSA or HSC. Some of these courses are delivered by RTO's other than TAFE, however, the majority of options are delivered by TAFE, either on-campus or online.
Students can undertake 1-year courses commencing in Y10, however, options are limited in Y10.
Students can undertake 1-year or 2-year courses commencing in Y11.
All courses can contribute to the gaining of the ROSA or HSC qualification, but only some courses can contribute to gaining an ATAR. If an ATAR is part of your plan then you need to discuss this with the careers adviser.
The application process for EVET courses is administered by our school's careers adviser. This process takes place in Term 3, and it is a process that runs separately to our schools subject selection process.
Admission into an EVET course is not guaranteed. Therefore, students must complete the school's normal subject selection process (to ensure students meet NESA requirements), and if successful at gaining a place in an EVET course, we then negotiate with students and parents/carers to replace one of the initial subject selections with the new EVET course.
Specifics about the application process and available options will be shared with your child via their Careers Google Classroom and in their Careers lessons.
Please follow the links above to find out more about TAFE NSW and NSW DET's information for EVET. Please contact our careers adviser if you would like to discuss EVET.
UAC SUBJECT COMPASS
The Universities Admissions Centre's Subject Compass is an extremely useful tool for current Y10's who are considering which subjects to choose for Y11.
How it works:
1. Enter your interests, skills, chosen career path or tertiary study plans to create your profile.
2. View a list of HSC subjects that best match your profile.
3. Select your preferred subjects from the list or add new subjects.
4. Check whether your chosen subjects will make you eligible for an ATAR.
5. Share your Subject Compass results with your careers adviser and parents/guardian.
SET UP A MYFUTURE ACCOUNT
The myfuture website is another useful site that contains careers information and career search tools. Students have free access to all of the content on the myfuture website when they sign up using their school email address.
Myfuture's interactive Career Bullseye Charts are one of the most straight forward ways to view potential career paths for you based on the school subjects available to you.
SKILLSROAD
Skillsroad is another site that provides information to assist with career planning. Their site can be navigated from the point of view of a student, or from that of a parent/carer. Working backwards from a career/industry choice can be a good way to arrive at your subject choices. Skillsroad has a great career quiz that can be completed in just a few minutes too.
NESA RULES AND ELIGIBILITY REQUIREMENTS
NESA is the governing body for the Y10 Record of School Achievement (ROSA) qualification, and the Y12 Higher School Certificate (HSC) qualification. The links below will refer you to the official rules and eligibility requirements for gaining each qualification.
DON'T FORGET WORK EXPERIENCE!
Work experience can be a useful tool to assist with making subject decisions. By experiencing a profession first-hand students can make informed decisions and choose subjects that support their career plan. See the Work Experience @ GPHS page to find out more about this option.
