Getting a Part-time job

STEP 1: GET A TAX FILE NUMBER

If you are looking to get your first job, or perhaps you've already been offered one, you will need to get a Tax File Number. This number will stay with you for life, and without it you won't get paid properly for all your hard work. This process can take some time, so it's best to get it started as soon as you decide you want to start working. The application process can vary depending on your circumstances, follow this link to find the correct application process for you. Make an appointment with the Careers Adviser if you need assistance with this.

STEP 2: GET A RESUME

Before applying for a part-time job you will need a resume. If you haven't already got one you can access resume help via your JobJump account or on the Resume & Cover Letters page of this site. Once again, please make an appointment to see the Careers Adviser if you need assistance with this.

STEP 3: APPLY, APPLY, APPLY.

Don't just apply for one job and then wait around for weeks or months to hear back from them. Apply for multiple jobs, and keep applying until you're successful. If you think you may need some work experience to build your skills, hop on over to the Work Experience @ GPHS page. Work experience can help build your confidence as well as your skills, and it's a great way to show potential employers how good you are!

From time to time local employers contact the school directly looking for new employees. These opportunities will be posted in the year group Google Classrooms. Below are links to some large employers from the local area who usually hire high school-aged employees. Students should make an appointment with our Careers Adviser if they require any assistance with these applications.
