In English, we aim to provide students with rich literacy experiences to guide them in becoming successful readers and writers. Literacy is a core part of the daily teaching and learning program for Kindergarten students at Blacktown South Public School.
Students participate in explicit phonics lessons based on phonemes (sounds) and sight words each week. This is followed by focused and targeted reading and writing lessons in small, differentiated groups’, while other students engage in independent learning activities around the classroom. Phonological awareness and oral language are key components of our program. Quality literature is used to build comprehension and enrich vocabulary.
All aspects of our English teaching program have been established using the learning outcomes in the new K-2 English Syllabus.
In Mathematics, we aim to provide students with engaging learning opportunities to develop their knowledge, skills and understanding in Representing Whole Number, Combining and Separating quantities, Forming Groups, Geometric measure, Two-Dimensional Spatial Structure, Three-Dimensional Spatial Structure, Non-Spatial Measure, and Data. Working Mathematically is embedded into each learning session.
At Blacktown South Public School, Kindergarten students also consolidate their learning by engaging in game-based activities that relate to everyday life. Students are encouraged to participate in structured talks to explore efficient ways to solve problems.
