To what extent does a person have the same power in different places?
To what extent does a person have the same amount of power over different people in different circumstances?
Why is it important for people to be aware about how people use power?
Activity 2.2
a) Copy the definitions of power into your workbook.
Often when people think about the term ‘power’, they think of strength, knowledge, or position. It is important to understand that there are various types of power.
b) Name the 8 different types of power into your workbook.
c) Complete the following power cards and provide an example of a positive use of power. One has been done for you (including a negative use of power).
In positive relationships, there is a positive balance of power. This means both people feel free to be who they are and express their thoughts and feelings because their opinions will be met with respect. On the other hand, often relationships can get rocky when there is an imbalance of power, and this can be quite destructive if unresolved or mismanaged. Negative relationships that cause conflict and stress can have a detrimental effect on a person's overall health and wellbeing.
There are influences on the attitudes we form about how power is used in relationships. We may not realise it, but we are constantly receiving messages from all around us about acceptable uses of power in relationships.
The three main influences to our attitudes in relationships are:
Family
Media
Peers
