The ‘Strong and Smart’ approach, developed by Dr Chris Sarra at Cherbourg State School, is now used in schools across the country to embrace a strong and positive sense of what it means to be Aboriginal in contemporary Australian society.
A selection of BCHS Executive, Senior Excutive and Teaching staff have been trained in the Leadership course from 2017 to present. The Stronger Smarter Team in 2023 hope to continue professionally developming all staff at BCHS now that COVID-19 restrictions has eased.

Staff were delivered an interactive and engaging workshop that focused on Aboriginal student engagement and attendance at school. These are the two fundamental reason's why it is important to have an Aboriginal Learning Pathway for every Indigenous student at BCHS. It is imperative that our jarjums grow strong with knowledge and feel deadly in their culture, to be future leaders in their Country.
Aboriginal Cultural Education - Lets take the first step together, is an introduction TPL for staff that are new to the teaching profession.
This TPL offers foundational information on various historical and contemporary aspects of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples and cultures.
Staff are encouraged to work with their Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander communities and/or staff, or local AECG to complete the six self-paced modules which explore building relationships, identity, statistics, Language, significant people and sites, impacts of past government policies, and the journey to reconciliation.
The foundational learning of this course encourages staff to reflect on their current knowledge of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples, histories, and cultures, and to consider how this new knowledge can be applied to all aspects of their work.
Staff are presented with engaging and interactive information, resources, and videos exploring various topics through the six modules:
Overview
Relationships
Australia Today
People and Culture
Dreaming to 1960s
Journey towards reconciliation
