Each year we hold an assembly to acknowledge the Stolen Generations - the Aboriginal children who were forcibly removed from their families under the governments assimilation policy.
National Reconciliation Week has come to an end, we wanted to share some deadly images from the Sorry Day Assembly held on Monday.
Thank you to Uncle Shunder for addressing students on what Sorry Day means to him and how we can ‘be a voice for generations’ by ensuring we continue to educate and inspire our future leaders of tomorrow.
Big thanks to our special guests, "Da Huncles”, who showcased the true spirit of reconciliation and unity between the Aboriginal community and non-Aboriginal community with their cover of “Black Fella White Fella” by the Warumpi Band. Band members: Jason Sines, Ray Arnett, Jeff Beale, Senior Constable Morgan Hadjialexiou and Stuart Kent.
Thanks to our students involved in our BCHS Aboriginal Boys and Girls Dance Group for their deadly performances.
Thank you to our assembly MC's Alliera James and Kordaie Ferguson, to the School Captains Hien Ho, Harrison Bavister and Sasha Oxland for sharing your perspective on what Sorry Day means to you.
Thanks to Neihanna Hippi, Natarlia James, Aaliyha Roberts, Melody Kelly and School Captain Nina Aboitiz for raising the flags to acknowledge our Stolen Generations past and present.
Thank you to Deputy Principal, Aaron McDonald for closing the assembly, as well as his ongoing contributions to Aboriginal Education. We're happy to have you back!
Massive thank you to the Jullum Team for their hard work and organisation of our assembly and walk of reconciliation.
Finally, thanks to all Ballina Coast High School students, staff and community members that attended the assembly and participated in our walk for reconciliation - an expression of support for meaningful reconciliation between Australia’s Indigenous and non-Indigenous peoples.
