A Young Carer is someone under 18 or is 18 years but still at school, who provides unpaid help and support to a relative who due to illness or disability cannot manage to live independently without their help. Some children and young people will have small caring roles, and some will have big caring roles. They might share this caring role with another sibling or an adult carer. A relative can be a mum, dad, stepparent, brother, sister, gran or grandad. Such illnesses and disabilities could be autism, ADHD, mental health, drugs and alcohol and physical disabilities such as fibromyalgia etc.
EAST LOTHIAN YOUNG CARERS
East Lothian Young Carers is a local charity established in 2002 to provide support to Young Carers aged 0 to 24 living in East Lothian.
They provide information, support and breaks from caring to young carers and their families.
EL Young carers want to ensure all young carers have the same opportunities as other children and young people their age.
They therefore need to know who the young carers are, so we have the most appropriate services in place to meet their needs. They can provide various breaks from caring such as school holiday trips to foxlake, cinema, zoo. Grants and vouchers referrals to other services such as the mental health youth work team.
If you would like to register your child as a young carer, please complete the identification questionnaire through the link here. Or by visiting their webpage.
