Who can you really trust? Gripping psychological horror, Ward D, is a brilliant read from start to finish. I would highly recommend this book for those who are interested in crime, psychology, and some shocking plot twists. Ward D by Frieda McFadden tells us the terrifying experience of a medical student’s first night on a psych ward, a night that quickly becomes fatal.
One of the key parts of the book is its complex characters, exploring several mental illnesses through clever storytelling and character building. Not only do we get an insight into the lives of the ward patients, but we’re also told all about their backstories, and their reasons for being admitted. This allows the readers to form an emotional bond with the characters, and when each of these characters all have completely different stories, it leaves you constantly questioning who to trust. Amy (the protagonist) is a likeable, relatable character, who is also questioning her own sanity, which makes us wonder how reliable the narrative really is and adds a whole other layer of mystery to the story.
Throughout the night, we are introduced to several new characters, each individual bringing a new piece to the story, from sweet, misunderstood characters to those who are a constant, looming threat. This complicated mix of personalities and relationships creates a tangled web of mistruths, leaving the reader to figure out the real story for themselves. Personally, I loved this book, and found it to be a great late night read, one that was difficult to put down, and left you constantly wanting to know more.
