Researcher
Since the beginning of the year we were told about this PYP exhibition and I was always curious to see how it would happen since this year we were studying online. We were given a choice to take up any topic close to our heart and I was very sure it was going to be Autism, since my brother is Autistic and I wanted to take up some of his responsibilities from my mother. I knew I would first have to do an in-depth research about it to be capable enough to take up responsibilities. In the course of my research, I realised that I had started this project with a very small goal and that I wanted to take community action. I wanted to make others aware about this condition, so that it can be diagnosed and treated well in time. I wanted others to be empathetic towards autistic people and make them as independent as possible. Hope you like my journey through the PYP Exhibition.
Mentor
As a Grade 3 teacher, I have planned various inquiries but this one was very special. This was the very first time I was mentoring a Grade 5 child for his PYP Exhibition. I decided to mentor Taher as soon as I read about his topic and his intentions to choose this research topic. I knew that all his wonderings were going to come from his first hand experiences and all his actions were going to be self-initiated and self-motivated. It was a very different experience from the previous years since the whole process happened online. Through this inquiry, as an individual I got various new insights not only about the topic but also about various teaching techniques and technological skills. It has been a heart warming journey as a teacher to see young learners being inquirers and having intentions of making the world a better place!
As a team, we discovered our love for Art and we cohesively decided to keep our logo a Paint Palette. The paint blobs on the palette represent the Learner Profiles, Skills, Attitudes and Concepts that we would like to put out in the world and paint it into a beautiful place to live. The paint brush represents the Action component.
I am inspired by my brother's journey through Autism. I wanted to share this journey of how my family deals with Autism and what my brother goes through on a daily basis. I chose this topic to spread awareness in society and also to make the world a better place to live in for people with Autism.
