Sweden - Mother Tounge Education Department
We are Mother Tongue Education Department in Trollhättan. We have something in Sweden which is a unique and powerful tool for strengthening and empowering students from immigrant communities- Mother Tongue Teaching.
So the organisations main activities are to help immigrant children feel secure in their identity and background through Mother Tongue teaching, and to give these students increased wellbeing and knowledge that will benefit them throughout life.
We aim to:
give a weekly lessons to the student from Lågstadiet, (Infant level), Mellanstadiet, (Junior level) and Högstadiet,(Senior
level) all over schools in the city of Trollhättan.
create several connecting channels among students from different schools all over the Trollhättan city both digitally and
practically.
organise regular and irregular meetings with schools’ staff for supporting the students from other backgrounds for better
understanding the school system, cultural issue, contacting with students’ families etc.
Our teaching activities at all levels are from grades 1 to 9 in elementary school. Activites include language teaching but also realia - cultural awareness of everything connected to the Mother Tongue, for instance music, poetry, literature, myths, legends, dialects, media, language history, major global events connected to the people who speak the language. Of course, the Swedish language is the main language in teaching process in the school system. In addition to this there is also focus on teaching out the mother tongue languages to students from the other nationalities and backgrounds. In our city (Trollhattan) the Mother Tongue Education Department in Trollhättan, there are 32 languages are being teaching in our city’s schools by our department’s teachers. This process helps and supports empowering and strengthening the students from immigrant community’s capacities. We are as a mother tongue languages teachers play great role between the schools and student’s families.
