ASL 1 - This course is designed to introduce students to the basic concepts of American Sign Language. Students will gain fluency by engaging in dialogues and learning activities that utilize the target language. This course focuses on vocabulary development, basic conversational strategies, grammatical features and an exploration of Deaf culture. The student will demonstrate proficiency through receptive and expressive class activities. Attending Deaf events are required each semester. College credit available.
ASL 2 - This course is designed to introduce students to the basic concepts of American Sign Language. Students will gain fluency by engaging in dialogues and learning activities that utilize the target language. This course focuses on vocabulary development, basic conversational strategies, grammatical features and an exploration of Deaf culture. The student will demonstrate proficiency through receptive and expressive class activities. Attending Deaf events are required each semester. Class performances and outside attendance at cultural events are required for this course. College credit available.
ASL 3 - Â This course is designed to build on students' American Sign Language communication skills. Students will gain fluency by engaging in dialogues and learning activities that utilize the target language. This course focuses on enhancing vocabulary development, in-depth conversational strategies, grammatical features, and the continued exploration of Deaf culture. The students will demonstrate proficiency through receptive and expressive class activities. Students will demonstrate and continue to develop expressive abilities using ASL. Students will explore ASL related careers, and create an interpreter portfolio that can be used in applying to an interpreter training program.
ASL 4 - Review of the grammar essentials with the emphasis on building vocabulary, conversational skills, and introduction to literature, including drama, prose, and poetry. Students may complete community service and job shadow activities.
