MEP is from the Centre for Innovation in Mathematics Teaching (CIMT) at the UK's Plymouth University, but it is based on a Hungarian series.
According to the Centre, the first book in the Hungarian series was used with students ages 5+, but in the UK, the first book was used with reception level students, the equivalent of Pre-K in the United States. Therefore, it might be more of a challenge than with most programs to match students with a level that does not feel too easy nor too difficult.
MEP has discovery-based approach to learning with an emphasis on math concepts and problem solving. Topics are not covered in chapters, but are spread throughout the year in a spiral fashion. The program is teacher-intensive, with separate lesson plan and practice books for Year 1 and above.

Miquon Math Labs have been around since the 1960s. Activities with Cuisenaire rods are an important part of the program, providing hands-on manipulatives to help students learn math concepts.
