Spelling Resource Ideas

In Kindergarten and first grade, spelling instruction is typically integrated into resources for teaching phonics and beginning reading skills, so you may not need a separate resource.

Please ask if you have questions about whether or not your beginning reading materials cover spelling.

  • 180 Days of Spelling & Word Study - K-6. Part of the 180 Days of Practice series reading resources

  • All About Spelling - This is a teacher-intensive program, but it's fun if you have a child that likes manipulatives.

  • Evan Moor Spelling: Building Spelling Skills - Grade 2-6

  • Sequential Spelling - A pattern-based approach to spelling.

  • Spelling Connections - A strong program and highly recommended, but not a good choice if you think that you might need an answer key, which is only available separately in an expensive teacher's manual. Spelling Connections provides weekly spelling lists and activities. Starting with the grade 3 book, word lists are given in both print and cursive.

Reviews of Spelling Apps and Online Resources

Common Sense - This is a good resource for parents and educators to find reviews and ratings for kid-related technology and media, and to find information about issues related to kids' use of digital devices and services. It covers movies, apps, websites, TV, music, and even books.

  • Common Sense has separate sections targeting information for parents and for educators. The best place to find spelling resource reviews is in the educator section: Common Sense Education, Search Reviews.
