Primary Mathematics, sometimes called "Singapore Math," is a series originally developed from curriculum materials used by Singapore students in the 1990s, materials which helped the country to start achieving top scores on international math tests. Recently, a 2022 edition has been published with an updated structure and new content.
Instruction
Instruction
Providing students with a solid conceptual understanding of mathematics and strong problem solving skills are noted features of the Primary Mathematics curriculum. In order to accomplish these goals, some of the instruction differs from what most parents may have experienced.
For help understanding and teaching with bar models, number bonds, ten frames, or any unfamiliar resources, check the Math Strategies and the Math Tools pages. Another source of information is the Singapore Math Inc. Homeschool page, which includes a section on training for home educators.
Four Different Editions
Four Different Editions
Primary Mathematics is available in four different editions:
New 2022 edition
original U.S. edition
U.S. Standards edition, aligned to an outdated version of the California State Standards
Common Core edition
All of the editions are good! The 2022 edition is more closely aligned to our math standards than original U.S. edition or the U.S. Standards edition, and there is a Home Instructor's Guide available. The Common Core edition has a Teacher's Guide but does not have a Home Instructor's Guide.
The Primary Mathematics editions all have multiple components.
