CK-12 is a non-profit educational organization which provides free resources for online learning, including grade-level digital textbooks as well as content arranged by concept. Users will appreciate that information is presented in a variety of ways, including text, adaptive practice problems, interactive exercises and simulations, and videos. CK-12 is particularly strong in math and science content, but has a growing number of resources in other subject areas.
Math lessons in CK-12 help students understand math concepts and apply their knowledge, sometimes through questions which ask students to explain their mathematical reasoning. Although this portion would be challenging for parents without a strong math background to support, CK-12 is still a valuable resource to use for learning at home.
Registering for an account is only necessary when you decide to save information, create assignments or track progress. You don't need an account to explore CK-12, so give it a try!
Students can search for concepts in CK-12 and use the filters on the left hand side of the screen to narrow results by grade level, subject, and category. Categories include options such as read, video, and assessments (adaptive practice).
This method only requires an account for the student in order to manage progress, and does not require and additional teacher account.
"CK-12 for Student Self-Study" These videos are several years old and some information has changed.
To work through grade-level content, use CK-12’s free FlexBook textbooks.
This option requires both a teacher account and a student account in order to track progress:
A parent or another educator must register for a teacher account and use the teacher dashboard to create a class (which could be a class with only one student), create assignments, and monitor student progress.
Students enroll in the class to complete and submit assignments.
Students do not need an email to enroll in a class; they may use a class code that is created when the teacher sets up a class.
View student progress with the report feature on the teacher dashboard.
CK-12 FlexBooks 2.0 are in an updated format, recently enhanced with embedded interactive content. Easily access resources such as printable study guides, Khan Academy videos, and additional texts with real-world connections to the math concepts.
Specific features vary, so check to see what’s available in a particular FlexBook. For example, CK-12’s CCSS grade 8 FlexBook 2.0 for math contains more questions with an autocorrect feature embedded within the lesson than the ones for high school. Also, not all the science FlexBooks have both a teacher and a student edition.
CK-12 FlexBooks 2.0 contains plenty of practice problems from which to choose:
Text-based examples and solutions within the lessons
PLIX (Play, Learn, Interact, Explore) interactive practice within the lessons
Adaptive practice sets at the end of each lesson
Extra practice sets which can be created by making a custom quiz: "How to Create a Quiz"
The adaptive practice sets are easy to use:
Questions are automatically graded and get easier or harder depending on whether or not students answer correctly
If the student continues to miss questions, CK-12 will suggest ways to learn, such as alternative reading material or videos, before resuming the practice
Problem sets come with an estimated length of time for completion, typically 5-15 minutes
Students need to answer ten questions correctly to meet the CK-12 practice goal, but may continue practicing afterwards
A CK-12 practice app is available for mobile devices, along with a complementary app to read FlexBooks online and offline; find the links on the CK-12 Tools and Apps page.
Available for the Algebra 1, Geometry and Algebra 2 Interactive CCSS FlexBooks 2.0, where they are located in the Chapter Pacing Guides of each Teacher Edition.
Not available for the Interactive Middle School Math 8 for CCSS FlexBook 2.0.
Tests are not interactive and must be printed and scored by hand.
CK-12 offers a custom quiz creator for making interactive quizzes.
For middle school and high school math, quiz questions must be selected by concept; there is no option to select by grade level, chapter, or standard.
These types of assessments are not available in FlexBooks 2.0; instead CK-12 provides mid-term and final projects.
CK-12 does not provide diagnostics.

Ability to share resources with other CK-12 community members
Printable PDFs in the original FlexBooks
Ability to assign content through a learning management system like Canvas (forthcoming for FlexBooks 2.0, expected fall 2019)
