Hawkeye

The Hawkeye is JP Stevens' only official student-run newspaper. In addition to regular updates to the online section (jpshawkeye.com), the newspaper publishes four to five issues per school year. Membership is open to the entire school; students may apply to any of the newspaper's four writing sections (News, Opinion, Features, and Sports), the Creative Department, or the Business Department. Staff writers and editors in each writing section write and prepare articles for publication; artists and photographers design and provide accompanying illustrations and photographs; and business associates coordinate activities and raise funds to cover the costs of printing the paper. Throughout the course of the year, all staff members are expected to attend four to five pre-layouts meetings. Editorial staff members are responsible for editing artwork and photographs on Adobe Photoshop and laying out pages for print on Adobe InDesign at layouts meetings. Hawkeye offers students their first foray into the journalism, artistic, and business fields. Members of the business department have the opportunity to gain hands-on business experience. They manage advertisements by contacting local businesses and companies and coordinate various fundraising events to cover the costs of the newspaper. Members of the Creative Department supplement articles with photographs and illustrations drawn on Adobe Photoshop and PaintTool SAI. They also design t-shirts and promotional flyers for the club.
