The Science program is in line with the Australian Science Curriculum and International Baccalaureate Middle Years Programme Sciences curriculum framework. This program provides for cutting edge science knowledge and learning.
It develops skills that incorporate the use of information technology, scientific problem solving and the safe use of laboratory equipment in open ended inquiry learning. It provides students with a variety of extension experiences including excursions, competitions and individual research opportunities.
The courses available to incoming Year 7 students are:
English French Stream (EFS) Science (follows the National French Curriculum)
Quantum Science, English Stream (ES) (for high performing students)
Discover Science (ES) is a comprehensive course for mainstream students
Students in Year 7 will undertake a school ability test. Student results from this test, their Semester 1 grades and teacher recommendation are used to determine student placements in Year 7 classes. All students in Science classes will constantly be given the opportunity to develop competencies in several areas, enabling their placement in classes to be reviewed. All students in Quantum Science need to continue to demonstrate their interest in and commitment to Science, to remain in this class.
Students in Discover Science classes will be offered many opportunities available to Quantum students. This is a comprehensive course that aims to develop a range of skills. The teaching strategies are paced to enable students more time for practicing core skills.
IB Middle Years Program Sciences requires students to develop skills in relating science to the world, to communicate effectively, to demonstrate knowledge and concepts, write practical reports, manipulate data and behave in a safe, consistent and responsible manner.
All students are invited to participate in the Australasian Science Competition, the Big Science Competition, and the Chemistry Quiz. Students receive individual, question-by-question feedback, and certificates.
In addition, the science faculty offers the opportunity for students to enter many national project-type competitions. These are constantly advertised in the science notice board. Any interested students are invited to negotiate with their Science teacher.
