The Mathematics curriculum is in line with the Australian Curriculum and the International Baccalaureate Middle Years Programme curriculum framework.
In Semester 1, all students in Year 7 follow the same course and sit for the same assessment tasks. Selection to the Advanced Mathematics Extended class (AME) takes place at the end of Semester 1. The top 30 students will be selected based on a range of assessment items, participation in Mathematics competitions and teacher recommendations. Position in this class is reviewed by the Maths Faculty at the end of each semester. Students who may have missed out may still be selected at this stage.
The pedagogical focus for Mathematics at Telopea is Inquiry Learning and Differentiation. Teachers create "hands-on " lessons so that students not only have concrete manipulatives to "play" with but they also get a good sense of what it is that they are learning. Real -life practical examples are used to emphasise the relationship of what is being taught in classroom to real -world situations.
Maths Support:
Google Classroom: Maths teachers use Google Classrooms for their classes. Lessons, homework and messages will be posted to this platform.
Text Book: Teachers use Pearson Mathematics. Each classroom has a set where students may be directed from time to time to refer to. These books are for classroom use only and no textbooks can be loaned out.
Calculators and other equipment : Year 7 will be expected to have a scientific calculator in Semester 2. (Casio is the brand that we normally use but parents may choose any scientific calculator of their choice). A 196 page grid book (0.5cm grid spacing) as well as pen, pencils, rulers etc will be needed.
Assessments:
Summative Tasks: Each term students will sit for 2 summative tasks. An in-class investigation task and a test which may cover all the topics covered up to the point of the test. All Summative tasks are individual , closed book and in all instances, the MYP rubric and criteria are used to assess students
Formative Tasks: Teachers assign formative tasks throughout the term. These tasks inform teachers how well their student are tracking. Formative tasks may be opened or closed book, individual or group. In most instances, teachers design a marking rubric to suit the requirements for the task.
Competitions:
At Telopea we offer a range of competitions throughout the year for students to enrich their learning and develop a love for Mathematics. All students are invited to join. Information on the competitions such as how to join, dates, times and cost will be advertised in the daily announcements closer to the dates of the competitions. Students are advised to look out for these announcements.
