Food Technology is a rotation subject for Years 7 and 8. We cover Food Hygiene and Safety, food production, processing and packaging as well as sustainable food production processes. Students design healthy meals and partake in practical skills in the kitchen.
In Year 7/8 Passion class we offer ‘Cooking with Confidence’ . This class covers basic cooking skills and the students learn to make interesting and healthy meals to make at home. We spend time in the Stephanie Alexander Kitchen Garden learning how to grow herbs and vegetables, which we use in the kitchen.
Year 9 and 10 can choose from Food Technology or Hospitality. In Food Technology we explore different nations and cultures both within Australia and around the world. The practical component covers a different country and culminates in the students cooking a three course meal based on a multicultural menu where they invite their teachers to evaluate their work.
Hospitality - Vocational Education Training (VET) Course is a formal qualification for the Hospitality Industry. Students start with a unit called ‘Use of Hygienic Practices for Food Safety’ which is a prerequisite for all other units. A very popular component is the coffee making unit ‘Prepare and serve espresso coffee’ Students have hands on experience helping operate our small cafe by making coffees for the staff. Students with this qualification can then continue their studies at college level, where they study Hospitality fundamentals,Industry Kitchen Practices and Kitchen Fundamentals.
At Namadgi School we offer Woodwork and Metalwork as part of the high school electives program. Students design, make and appraise a variety of physical objects including timber chopping boards, timber stools and coffee tables, lathe designed handles and toys, basic welding and sheet metal design. Students are introduced to the design process and will start to problem solve projects using basic workshop machines and processes including cutting, filing, sanding, drilling and turning. Students develop portfolios of work samples which will include steps involving technical drawing, leading to creative wood projects.
We also offer Textiles and Photographic Media as part of our elective program. Textiles Technology enables students to confidently use a range of technologies and create an awareness of related career pathways and leisure pursuits in textiles industries. A study of Textiles Technology provides students with broad knowledge of the properties, performance and uses of textiles in which fabrics, yarns and fibres are explored, and how these are used in conjunction with colouration and decoration techniques. The Photographic Media program enables students to develop skills in using multi-media production software and cameras to develop a cross section of photographic projects. These projects are used for displays and school promotions, with classes often filming assemblies and developing short video content.
