SENIOR LEARNING SUPPORT UNIT AT NAMADGI SCHOOL

Welcome to the Senior Learning Support Unit at Namadgi School. Our students benefit from small class sizes, differentiated and individualised programs catered to suit each child’s needs. There are currently two LSU classes as well as a dedicated Arts and Life Skills program taught by a specialist teacher. Students also have opportunities to attend other mainstream classes according to their individual needs, their point of interest and suitability of the class.

The Senior Learning Support Unit (LSU), staffed by highly trained teachers and Learning Support Assistant staff provides a welcoming environment for students who require extra support with their learning needs.

Unique to the LSU is the Life Skills program which includes social skills development as well as other practical skills development – for example, the Cooking program. Within the Cooking program, students work with a partner and learn about hygiene practices, safe food preparation, nutrition, measurement and method processes for producing successful recipes.

Students are taught the following subjects in the Learning Support Unit. The content taught is in accordance with the Australian Curriculum and individualised to cater for each student’s specific academic needs as outlined in their Individual Learning Program (ILP):

· English

· Mathematics

· Humanities

· Science

· Health & Physical Education

· Life Skills (including Food Technology)

· Visual Arts

All students, except for year 6, also attend the mainstream classes for the Passion Project line. During the Passion Project line, the year 6 students remain in the LSU for an extra Literacy/Numeracy line. Year 9/10 students can also attend one mainstream elective throughout the term.
