Japanese may not be the first language that comes to mind when you think of studying a foreign language, but there are many great reasons to learn Japanese. Learning Japanese opens doors for you to become a true global citizen by opening your eyes to different perspectives of the world, styles of communication and lifestyles.

At Namadgi School Students have the opportunity to study Japanese from Years 6 to 10. All Year 6-8 students study Japanese and learn about topics such as family, pets, food, daily routines, anime and manga and sport/hobbies. All students can learn this language and build on from the Primary program.

For Year 9 and 10 students, Japanese is an elective subject and allows them to extend their language skills further and gain confidence in the core skills of reading, writing, speaking and listening. Completing Year 10 Japanese enables students to have a pathway to study Japanese at College level and the possibility of doing Japanese extension studies at Australian National University (ANU).

The students also have the opportunity to participate in cultural excursions such as Japanese Film Festival, Food excursions and assist with the Nara University High School Student visit.

The most exciting part of studying Japanese for Year 9 and 10 students is to go on the Japanese Trip. Every two years we have the international trip to Japan. On previous Japanese trips, we have jumped into the future and landed in the metropolis of Tokyo, gone back in time to the old cities and seen the temples/shrines of Kyoto and Nara, remembered the atrocities of war in Hiroshima and Nagasaki, and experienced rural and mountainous Nagano Prefecture.

Namadgi School also offers opportunities for students in Years 6-10 to participate in Japanese Extension Classes which further develop their interest, confidence and communication in Japanese. The subject is highly recommended for Years 9 & 10 students who will study Japanese at college level.

At Namadgi School, we offer students in Years 9 and 10 the opportunity to study a language of their choosing. Students who are passionate and capable of guiding themselves through study will really enjoy this course. The teacher provides the tools to study a chosen language and matches students with external language partners who assist them with their communication skills. Students come away with improved understanding and confidence in their target language, as well as a deeper understanding of how languages function.
