Photomedia Industry Studies

This practical course provides students with a hands-on understanding of the skills, principles and knowledge involved in a large range of media areas including photography, video production, photo-journalism, pop culture, news and current affairs. Students will work individually, and in groups, to provide media content for a variety of school promotions and projects. Students will produce photography and video at school events for use in school assemblies, newsletters and the yearbook. Students will become official media teams for a faculty at the school, working closely with the executive teacher to produce content for regular school newsletters, the school website and assemblies. Students will be provided with opportunities to attend school excursions and representative sport events as the official media crew. With a strong community focus, students will look to capture and present the school's CARES values in action. Students will also gain communication skills and further develop their ability to work in teams towards a common goal. Time management and an ability to think creatively are important aspects of the course. This course would be a good introduction to those students who are considering studying Media at college or a career in Media. This course is offered on the Year 10 only line in semester one and to both Years 9 and 10 in semester two.

Partner Courses - Digital Photography and Graphic Design

Digital Photography

Students in Digital Photography explore the use of digital cameras and Photoshop retouching to produce their images. Students will learn the essential skills in using digital cameras and how to then enhance their digital images through advanced editing techniques. The unit will provide students with the opportunity to learn about composition and design along with developing creative skills. Content will also include digital presentation techniques and an understanding of how to analyse the work of other photographers.

Black and White Film Photography

This unit is based around traditional black and white photography using film cameras and associated darkroom techniques. The unit will provide a thorough understanding of the basic skills of traditional black and white photography. Activities include making your own camera, using sunlight to make pictures, processing film and developing and printing black and white photographs.

Making Movies - Yr 9 only

Students in this foundation course learn the various techniques and processes for making short films. Students will learn about how to develop ideas for film production, create scripts and storyboards prior to making their first production. Students will also develop their artistic skills and learn to work both in groups and independently to produce their videos. Group projects involve the creation of a drama/horror short film. Selected films are showcased at school events, such as school assemblies, and entered into competitions. This course is offered on the Year 9 only line.

Video Productions

This advanced course builds on the concepts, techniques and processes learnt in Film Photography, Digital Photography, Video Production and Making Movies. Advanced camera, computer, darkroom and production techniques are complemented by the further development of understanding of the visual language of photographic and moving images. Students complete two major self-directed assignments, working in the medium of their choice. Students will be expected to exhibit their work at the end of the semester and to participate in appropriate photographic or video competitions. This course is excellent preparation for those students wishing to do Photography or Media studies at college. Due to the advanced concepts taught, and the self-directed tasks involved, it is highly recommended that students complete a prior unit of photography or video studies.
