Sports Science & Coaching

This course is designed to extend the student’s knowledge of coaching and the science behind sporting performance. Students will complete a Beginning Coaching course run by the Australian Sports Commission and have the opportunity to coach their peers and junior students, liaising with a feeder Primary School. Students will also be required to assist at Primary School carnivals in an official capacity. Students will also be introduced to the study of Sports Science. They will explore the anatomical basis of human movement and analyse sport from a different perspective. Specific topics include: the systems of the body involved in movement (muscular, skeletal, circulatory and nervous systems), fitness testing and basic exercise physiology.

This course is semester long

Active Games

This course is designed to engage students in a variety of sport and fitness activities to promote a positive lifelong attitude to physical well-being. The Active Games unit focuses on game play rather than skills-based lessons and will provide challenging alternatives for students who enjoy team-based activities whilst still enjoying being physically active. In this unit the students will be able to select from a range of activities, allowing them to participate in a mix of traditional and non-traditional sports and activities not normally offered in the usual PE curriculum.

Fit For Life

The Fit for Life elective aims to provide students with an opportunity to try several games and recreation-based activities in a non-competitive environment. Students who choose the Fit for Life unit will have an input into the sports and activities chosen. All students will be expected to be willing to try new things and be open to new ideas. The basis is for students to learn skills and experience opportunities that will allow them to enjoy leading an active lifestyle now and after their time at school. During the Fit for Life unit, community organisations will also be used to enhance the learning experience where appropriate. Any variations to the topics covered will be at the discretion of the teacher teaching the unit in consultation with the SHAPE Executive Teacher. They will make choices that best meet the needs of the group.

PLEASE NOTE - There will be a cost involved (approximately $50) to cover excursions to external organisations. The expectation would be that all students attend all excursion opportunities. Every endeavour will be made to make all excursions as cost-effective as possible.

Outdoor Pursuits - Year 9

This course is aimed at students who would like to build their leadership skills and learn basic outdoor skills. Students will also learn about what it means to be a part of a team. Students who select this subject will be encouraged to pursue formal leadership opportunities such as the Lead Group in year 10, School and House Captains, or be an integral part of a school community group such as the Green Team, Mental Health Ambassadors or Interact Club.

The subject will consist of a mix of approximately 75% practical and 25% theory. The theory component covers the core concepts of leadership and outdoor skills. The practical component will utilise games and problem solving activities to reinforce the theory.

The practical component will also include a number of day excursions inside Canberra which could include: Block Haus and Lake Ginninderra activities. Students will be offered the opportunity to go on an overnight camp to consolidate and celebrate their skills. There will be additional costs for some excursions and the camp.

Leadership and Outdoor Learning is a new course we are trialling next year. Subject teachers will decide the location of the camp according to availability and class interest. The surf camp, pictured above, is an example of the type of camp that may be offered.

I can only do this course once in Year 9 and once in Year 10
