MANDARIN The future is bright for young Australians with Chinese language skills and an understanding of Chinese culture. The size of Chinese markets and other markets accessible through Chinese intermediaries has led to Chinese becoming a key trade language. Knowledge of Chinese can open doors to a wide range of employment opportunities in the areas of banking, finance, business, education, hospitality, retail and tourism. China offers a unique history, geography and culture. Canberra’s large Chinese speaking community and the abundance of Chinese restaurants, business and social groups all provide students of Chinese with real opportunities to use the language beyond the classroom. Chinese news, current affairs and entertainment through local Chinese newspapers, SBS TV and radio stations provide authentic Chinese resources for learners of Chinese.
Year 9
In year 7 and 8, students learned basic skills in speaking, listening, reading and writing in Chinese. While they still consolidate these skills, students in year 9 will focus on practical language skills in a broader context. They will also acquire a repertoire of language learning strategies, demonstrate cultural understanding and develop intercultural competence.
Students are able to interact with a range of known and unknown participants and engage in discussions about issues of personal interest and life. They will be exploring real life situations, e.g. moving house, meals, traveling, health, pet, etc.
Year 10
Students in year 10 continue to develop their communication skills with increasing autonomy under historical, social and cultural framework. Students will explore how Chinese and Australian young people experience and perceive youth culture and how it relates to their own identity. They will also investigate the life stories of young people in Chinese‐speaking cultures and Australia.
Students explore a range of text types, including informative digital media texts, short videos, narrative fiction, TV programs and music and learn to create and perform different types of texts. They will investigate more real life situations, e.g. making friends, shopping, schooling, hobby, etc.
