This course introduces students to the fundamentals of mechanical engineering using a project-based approach. Mechanical engineering is the study and creation of devices that convert energy into movement. Although projects from year to year may vary, students may design and build mechanical model race cars, hydraulic systems, and kinetic sculptures. The early part of this course includes learning how to use CAD (computer aided design) to create 3D printed objects and parts for later creations. Students will learn about force, work, simple machines, hydraulic and pneumatic systems, and 3D printing. They will also build with mechanical components including gears, levers, and linkages to create complex mechanical systems.Â
