Scheduling
The most essential resource necessary for the delivery of quality Computer Science instruction, aside from dedicated teachers, is TIME. A school wide schedule has been developed that provides 40 minutes for daily Computer Science instruction in grades four and five, and 30 minutes for weekly Computer Science instruction in transitional kindergarten through grade three.
At East Union Elementary, fourth and fifth grade Computer Science classes are included within a modified departmentalized format. One teacher, a Computer Science Specialist and Instructional Coach, is responsible for planning and delivering instruction. That same teacher, along with an assistant Computer Science specialist, visits each TK-3 classroom every other week with one of the fourth or fifth grade classes. Explicit Computer Science instruction is provided, with fourth and fifth grade students serving as mentors for younger students. During weeks opposite direct instruction, TK-3 general education teachers facilitate classes during which Computer Science skills from the preceding week are practiced and applied. For detailed lesson plans, please visit the Grade Level Resources page. Here you will find resources for both integrated and stand-alone Computer Science lessons.
