Have you ever seen a hurricane on the news? Have you ever experienced a hurricane? Hurricanes can be pretty terrifying. For example, trees may fall down, there may be flooding, and there can be unpleasant winds. Do you know how they form? Do you know how to help?
Usually, the average wind blow is about 10 mph, and 30 mph is a really windy day, so 60-70 mph would be really windy. But 30 mph is nothing compared to a hurricane. Category 1 is 74-95 mph! That is really windy. And category 5 is 157 mph or higher! Could you imagine what that would feel like? (www.nhc.noaa.gov/aboutsshws.php)
What is a hurricane?
A hurricane is a storm that has a maximum sustained winds of greater than 74 mph.
Where do hurricanes come from?
According to the article, “How & Where Hurricanes Form” from Live Science, hurricanes typically form in warm waters in either the Caribbean or the Atlantic. They start as disturbances in the atmosphere and if conditions are perfect a tropical depression can form, which later might grow into a hurricane.
Why do we give names to hurricanes?
Storms are given short, distinctive names to avoid confusion and streamline communications. (This means that it is faster and easier to call a hurricane by a name.) Until the early 1950s, tropical storms and hurricanes were tracked by year and the order in which they occurred during that year. Hurricane Ike (2008) was the third costliest storm in United States history.
How do they pick the name for a hurricane?
Have you ever wondered how they pick a name for a hurricane? Well first, the Scientists have to pick out of 6 lists of names. Next, the scientists have to take the name of the list, so they don't re use it again. It is supposed to be “inappropriate” to use one hurricane name for another hurricane.
When Did Some of The Hurricanes Happen? And Where?
This year, a lot of hurricanes hit. One recent hurricane is Hurricane Harvey, which started on August 17, 2017 and ended on September 3, 2017. Another recent one is Hurricane Irma, which started on August 30, 2017 and hit Florida, and ended in September 16, 2017. Fortunately, this year our spot, where we live, didn’t get hit by any hurricanes. Some were kind of close to our area, though.
What You Can Do To Help
Did you know that you can donate to help people who got hit by a hurricane? All you need to do is just go to a website that allows you to do so or go to a website that shows you how and where you can donate to the hurricane victims. (Of course, you ALWAYS want to get your parents’ permission and help with this kind of thing.) Hurricanes can wreck buildings and take things from people. Hurricanes are like tornadoes but they're not exactly the same.
Have you done anything to help the people affected by hurricanes? Willow Lane did! Mrs. Stratchko, a first grade teacher at Willow Lane, did a drive to help Hurricane Harvey. People donated many things, like food and supplies. Miss Pilsits, the counselor does year-round drives for many people. She does coat drives, school supplies drives, and some others.
In conclusion, there are many different types of hurricanes. For example, Hurricane NATE!!! Even though there are so many, you can help lots of people by donating.
