Bus duty is a job that 5th graders at Willow Lane Elementary can participate in. This duty consists of three jobs. The bus duty person either holds a sign or guides students down to their buses. You can also put the bus numbers on the chart. Read ahead to find out more about these exciting tasks.
Holding the bus signs is fun. Each sign has the number of the bus on it. Some of the buses are 110, 126, 207, and 140. You also have to tell students to ,“Slow down,” or, “Stop running,” when they are not following the rules. When you hold a sign on the first day of bus helpers, you get assigned to a bus. That is the sign that you will hold for the rest of the school year.
Another job that you can do instead of holding bus signs is walking kids to their buses. In this job, you go to the classes that may have a student that needs direction to their buses. You might even have to take multiple kids down at once!
You start off by asking either the student’s teacher or the student which bus they ride. Then you take them down to their buses and make sure they go onto the the correct one. Sometimes they will go onto the wrong one. Ensuring that students go onto their assigned bus is a huge responsibility yet adds to the fun part of the job!
Adding bus numbers to the chart is assigned to one person. This person may ask someone to check the placement of the buses. Then they put the bus number on the chart. Each time a bus arrives, you ask someone to see which bus it is or you can walk down and check which bus has pulled in. The person who adds the numbers to the chart can also guide students to their buses once they are done adding the bus numbers.
Bus duty is only available to 5th graders. If you are interested, you can tell your teacher that you want to join bus duty. One thing that you should keep in mind is that each day is different. You might not always have a job due to the number of students that work daily. However, bus duty is one of the most fun and rewarding jobs that 5th graders can do!
