School Wide Positive Behavior and Intervention Support

Positive Behavior Interventions and Supports (PBIS) is a proactive, multi-tiered approach to discipline that promotes appropriate student behavior and increased learning. PBIS is a means of reducing non-academic barriers to student achievement. PBIS can help significantly in maximizing the time students are engaged in relevant learning tasks. The PBIS approach provides a continuum of prevention and intervention supports at each of the three tiers: universal (for all students), secondary (for students at risk), and tertiary (for students with intensive needs). At the tertiary level, PBIS embraces the conceptual approaches of wraparound and/or person-centered planning for students who have challenging behavioral needs requiring intensive support.

Wescosville Elementary School adopted the School-Wide Positive Behavior Interventions and Supports (SWPBIS) in 2012. Wescosville is recognized and certified by the state for implementing SWPBIS at all Three Tiers with fidelity.

WES SWPBIS Team

The WES SWPBIS team meets monthly to review implementation of the SWPBIS framework in the building, examine student behavior data, and support students and teachers when behavioral needs arise. The team also collaborates with consultants from the Carbon Lehigh Intermediate Unit 21 and PaTTAn to ensure the framework continues to be implemented with fidelity. If a parent and/or teacher has concerns regarding a student's functioning, the SWPBIS team helps to identify the areas of need as well as tiered-level of interventions to support the student's functioning.

Student Assistance Program (SAP)

The Pennsylvania Student Assistance Program (SAP) is a systematic team process used to mobilize school resources to remove barriers to learning. SAP is designed to assist in identifying issues including alcohol, tobacco, other drugs, and mental health issues which pose a barrier to a student’s success. The primary goal of the Student Assistance Program is to help students overcome these barriers so that they may achieve, advance, and remain in school. While Student Assistance Programs exist in other areas of the country, the structure and operation of the program in Pennsylvania is a unique expression of an integrated model serving the needs of Pennsylvania families and students.
