As per the Pennsylvania Department of Education’s (Chapter 16) Mentally gifted is defined as outstanding intellectual and creative ability the development of which requires specially designed programs or support services, or both, not ordinarily provided in the regular education program. (22 Pa. Code §16.1)
All 2nd-5th grade students in East Penn School District participate in the gifted screening process. The screening occurs in the Fall for students in grades 3-5 and in the winter for students in grade 2. If the student meets the criteria on the first level of screening, parents are notified that their child is recommended for second level screening assessments. If a student meets the second level screening criteria, a comprehensive gifted evaluation is recommended. Parents may also request more information about the gifted evaluation process by contacting Andrea Lerch (alerch@eastpennsd.org), Steven Neikam (sneikam@eastpennsd.org), or the student's teacher.
