Español 1
*Plaza Mayor, Segovia, España
¡Hola, estudiantes de español 1! You're probably wondering, so...what will we do in Spanish 1 this year?
It's going to be great! First we learn a bit about language learning in general. Do you remember learning your first language? How old were you? What helped you learn it? We talk about culture and how it applies to a language class, along with our daily lives. We get right down to basic conversation from the first week! Practice makes better! Get ready! The goal is to practice speaking Spanish as much as possible. We learn to talk about ourselves and our friends, express our hobbies and likes/dislikes, talk about our families, discuss school, tell about places we go and what we do there--fun stuff! By the end of this course, you'll be ready for Spanish 2 to keep on learning this wonderful language. ¡Fantástico!
Our On-line textbook is called Avancemos 1a (blue book).

**How should you study for Español 1?
IMPORTANT! BE COMFORTABLE USING SCHOOLOGY! CHECK UPDATES DAILY! ALL WORK WILL BE POSTED/ACCESSIBLE THERE UNLESS OTHERWISE NOTED.
MOST IMPORTANT: Practice makes better. Study a little each day (un poco cada día). Do not wait until the last minute. Be responsible. If what we do in class is not enough for you, you must do extra work outside of class.
Make flashcards. Picture flashcards work best - write the Spanish word on one side; include picture/visual on the other (eliminate English!) Organize vocab by themed groups. Learn a few at a time. Match synonym/antonyms. Play matching/memory games. Save these in a shoebox for the year and review them regularly.
When we start a new list, look for connections to other "old" words.
When we start a new list, identify the tricky words and give them extra study time.
Review vocab regularly! It helps!
Pronounce the words aloud! Say them to yourself, family, friends, pets :)
Learn cognates--they make life easier :)
Take risks practicing aloud. Record yourself. How do you sound?
