New College Cost Calculators
Applying to college can feel like a high-stakes gamble. How much will college ultimately cost? Colleges may offer scholarships to make school more affordable. But there are also factors, like pricey supplies or transportation costs, that could make college more expensive for many students.
Two new calculators may be helpful:
Niche True Cost: The popular college rankings website Niche has a new tool to help students get a more realistic view of their costs. Students are asked typical questions about grades and family income that influence how much aid they might get. Then the calculator goes further, helping students dig deep and consider all the costs they may face to earn their degree. Perhaps not for the faint of heart. But a helpful dose of realism. [Read More]
MyIntuition: This calculator is simpler — and that’s the point. This “quick college cost estimator” is designed to give families an estimate of what they will pay by entering just a few numbers. It’s not as precise as a true college calculator, but it’s easy to use and lets families know if they will be eligible for substantial financial aid.
What Are “No-Loan” Schools?
Is your dream school a pricey private college? There is hope. Some of the most popular private colleges promise to make school affordable for you and your family if you get accepted. They will reduce their cost with college scholarships and work-study. No student loans at all. BUT every school defines “need” differently. Always check each school’s financial aid page. Policies vary!
How to Find Schools That Meet Full Need? Make a college list with reach, match, and safety schools. Include options that are already affordable or more expensive — but generous with aid. Wondering where to start?

College Scorecard
This week, the U.S. Department of Education (ED) released updates to the College Scorecard to make this interactive web tool more helpful for students and families considering colleges. The revisions will allow individuals to easily compare colleges across costs, graduation rates, and post-college earnings.
College Scorecard changes also include an annual refresh of the cumulative loan debt of student borrowers at the institution-level as well as by field of study within each institution. The tool additionally features federal student loan repayment rates at the institution.
College Scorecard shines a spotlight on affordability, inclusivity, and outcomes, over exclusivity and colleges that leave students without good jobs and with mountains of debt.
