All,
This week’s Tech Tip is about my absolute favorite built in tool in Windows, the Snipping Tool. I use this tool all the time and is how I quickly add “screenshots” from the computer screen into my emails.
Here’s what you do. Click the Windows button, or tap the Windows key on your keyboard, and start typing the word “snipping”. You only need to type a few letters, and “Snipping Tool” should appear in the Best Match section of the menu. Open it.
Now, use the little + button to take a snip. Your screen will freeze and dim and your mouse will turn into crosshairs. Now, click and hold the mouse button and drag a box around the item on your screen you want to capture. As soon as you release the mouse, your snip will appear in a new window. You can then select several tools to work with the image(my favorites are the red pen and yellow highlighter). You can adjust these tools by clicking on them. Changing the color and size is pretty simple. Once the picture is how you want it, you can save it, or better yet, copy it to your clipboard, then paste it right into the document you are working on.
There is even a “Timer” you can set, which is very helpful when trying to capture menus. You set the timer to a certain number of seconds, click the + button and then get the menu you want to capture opened. After the set number of seconds, the screen freezes and you can capture anywhere on the screen.
There are many other features of the Snipping Tool, but these simple ones are a great place to start. Of course, there is a shortcut to get to the basic tool, WinKey-Shift-S will freeze your screen right where it is and give you the option to select the area of the screen you want. You can even record video of the selected area! Lots more info is available on the web, but for a full support page, Microsoft has it all here.
Chromebooks: On a Chromebook, you can open the Quick Settings panel by clicking the clock icon in the bottom right corner of the desktop. From there, you can select Screen Capture to open the snipping tool. You can also use the keyboard shortcut Shift + Ctrl + Show Windows to open the snipping tool.
Hope this was useful!
