This section is meant as a resource for students and parents that wish to upgrade their instrument and accessories. Please note that no student will be denied the opportunity to perform with the EYHS band program because of the quality of their instrument. It is important that all students understand that proper care and maintenance of instruments is crucial to their function, not matter what the quality may be.
If you have the opportunity it is suggested that you try out different instruments to get an idea of how well the instrument works for you. What may be a good instrument for one player may not work well for another.
Double reeds can be incredibly fragile and frustrating, but are very important for your performance. There are several articles on reeds found in the bassoon and oboe article category of the Google classroom.

The bassoon is very complex instrument, the boot contains two tubes that are connected by a U shaped joint. Remove the bocal, then the bell, then the bass joint, and finally the elbow joint (this should be the reverse of how you put it together). Shake moisture out of all parts, then drop the weight end of the swab through the small end of each joint and pull through gently. Clean the bocal with a pipe cleaner, and use a large wool swab on the bell and bass joint. Check the tone hole and blow through to remove water. Use a pipe cleaner to clean your reed, always push through from the cork end, never in reverse.
