All H.S. band students should have a metronome and tuner for independent practice! There are great, free Apps for phones (Band Mate), or you can order the Korg TM-50. The app., "Tonal Energy" is one of the best all in one app available, but it does cost a small amount of money.
It is always better to buy a used, professional instrument than a new beginner or intermediate horn which often don't play in tune or last for many years.
Quality mouthpieces and reeds matter quite a bit. This is a simple, low-priced upgrade that makes a big impact!
Finally, be sure to carefully clean and maintain your instrument so it will always function and sound better.
