Lessons with Joe Alessi
This section is meant as a resource for students and parents that wish to upgrade their instrument and accessories. Please note that no student will be denied the opportunity to perform with the EYHS band program because of the quality of their instrument. It is important that all students understand that proper care and maintenance of instruments is crucial to their function, not matter what the quality may be.
If you have the opportunity it is suggested that you try out different instruments to get an idea of how well the instrument works for you. What may be a good instrument for one player may not work well for another.
MOUTHPIECES:
BE CAREFUL TO CHECK SHANK SIZING - LARGE or STANDARD
This is generally more of an issue for Euphoniums, but you don't want to order a bass trombone mouthpiece (generally large shank) by accident!

Dennis Wick 5BS

OTHER ITEMS:
Trombone Length Cleaning Snake
Trombone Stand
Yamaha Slide Oil and Spray Bottle
We recommend Yamaha Slide Oil over Slide-o-Mix as it lasts longer, leaves less build-up, and doesn't need to be cleaned off as frequently.
BASS TROMBONE:
Bass trombones reach lower pitches through the use of 2 extra attachments operated with the left hand. The school owns a bass trombone it is not suggested that students purchase a bass bone.
Bach 50B3

Thayer Valve:
NOTE ON F ATTACHMENTS: Intermediate to Advanced instruments are generally designed with F attachments that allow the trombone to play lower pitches. The attachment consists of an extra length of piping that can be used by depressing the left hand thumb to move a rotary valve. (See below for a diagram of how restringing a rotary valve). Some valve trombone use a mechanical Thayer valve that is more advance and does not use string. Please note that rotary valves require a slightly heavier oil then piston valves
