Dynamic Risk Management for School Excursions: From Pre-Trip Planning to Real-Time Decision-Making
School trips are a very important part of education as they provide real-world experiences which support learning back in the classroom. However, they remain one of the highest-risk activities schools undertake. The gap between what we think will happen and what actually does is where incidents occur, but often what good risk management and safety looks like isn’t clearly defined nor understood.
This session cuts through the noise to focus on what actually effective safety looks like when it comes to school trips.
We'll explore:
• The 5 elements which go into assessing risk for any sort of trip
• Key considerations for international trips
• Dynamic risk management & decision making. When to adapt, when to cancel and how to make sounds decisions when needed
Drawing on 20+ years as a teacher, trip leader and head of campus we’ll look at how to can build a culture of safety to protect your people and ensuring good educational outcomes from your programs.

About David Gregory:
David is a seasoned educational and trip safety leader with over two decades of experience in operational management and risk management in education with around 2,000 nights out on school programs.
David hold a master’s degree in Defence (global security and intelligence) from the Australian Defence Force Academy and as CEO of Xcursion Safety a software and training company, David leads a team of industry specialists supporting schools throughout Australia, in NZ, SE Asia & the Middle East with practical approaches to risk management for trips and activities outside the classroom with a focus on empowering school leaders to build effective cultures of safety.
David has run large outdoor education programs and residential programs as well as international school tours for several Australian private schools including Xavier College, Scots College, Kinross Wolaroi * SCECGS Redlands. In addition to this he has worked in retail, hospitality and with a number of politicians through which he developed some well- practiced media and crisis communications skills.
David’s work has been strongly influenced by the need to provide great educational opportunities for students to grow through experiential education as well as ensure the risks associated with these programs are minimised and well managed.
