Initial Incident Updates


The Duck Pond Fire began Saturday, April 16 in the early afternoon in the area of the Duck Pond Open Space between Gypsum and Dotsero.

89 acres, 60% contained

No evacuations or road closures in place at this time

Investigators believe the fire was human-caused, investigations are ongoing

April 18, 5 p.m. - All pre-evacuation orders remaining from the Duck Pond Fire were lifted as of 17:15 today, 4/18/22. Fire-related road closures on Hwy 6 lifted at 19:00.

4:54 p.m. - Firefighters reported great success in operations today. The fire is at 88 acres, 60% containment, with no structures lost. The fire was human caused and the investigation is ongoing. Beginning at 6:00 p.m., the evacuation orders are LIFTED and are now in pre-evacuation; pre-evacuation areas are cleared. Please bring proof of residency, as this is restricted to residents only. Highway 6 will remain closed from the east side of River Dance to Yorkview area. The incident is not over and officials recommend staying on alert and continuing to monitor for updates. Several crews will be out this evening conducting roaming patrols. There are still many hazards such as hoses and appliances- please do not move or interfere with equipment. Please stay on your private property and do not venture onto BLM land or other fire affected areas. Thank you for your patience and cooperation. 10:10 a.m. The Duck Pond Fire estimated at 100 acres and 20% contained.

9:00 a.m. Confirmed that no structures have been lost at this time.

April 17, 7:00 a.m. Current evacuation zones expected to remain in place until this evening due to fire suppression activities and expected wind.

10:30 p.m. Due to favorable weather conditions, evacuations are being lifted for some parts of Northwest Gypsum. Those areas will remain in pre-evacuation; residents in areas now under pre-evacuation may return home. Other areas remain under evacuation orders. Please visit the map for more information.

9:07 p.m. Confirmed that no structures have been lost at this time.

8:43 p.m. A Facebook video update on the Duck Pond Fire will occur on the Eagle County PIO Facebook page this evening.

8:40 p.m. All evacuation and pre-evacuation notices currently in effect will REMAIN IN EFFECT overnight on Saturday, April 16.

7:37 p.m. I-70 has reopened in both directions

6:52 PM Update: EVACUATION ORDER - Residents, businesses and others at the western end of Gypsum to Dotsero, EVACUATE NOW. Mandatory Evacuation Order in place. This includes all locations south of Highway 6 from MM140 to the Dotsero interchange including Riverdance RV park and Stoneyard Distillery.

6:40 p.m. Eagle County Animal Services is available to take in pets, 1400 Fairgrounds Road. Crates and food are also available at the Eagle River Center. For more information regarding animal services, call 970-328-3647 and press 2.

6:05 p.m. Estimated size of fire 25-30 acres.

5:54 p.m. Colorado Department of Transportation is initiating the northern alternate route for I-70 traffic. The Eastbound closure point is now in place from Exit 87 (Rifle). The Westbound closure point is Exit 157 (Wolcott). More information about travel at https://www.facebook.com/coloradodot

5:21 p.m. Update: PRE-EVACUATION NOTICE: Residents, businesses and others in Red Hill Area, please be ready to evacuate due to a wildland fire. This includes Beacon Rd, Cedar Dr, Strohm Cir, Highland Rd, Sunset Ln, Knob Ln. An evacuation shelter is being set up at Eagle River Center at 794 Fairgrounds Rd. Pets are allowed.

5:16 p.m. A PRE-EVACUATION notice has been issued for Cedar lane to Strohm Circle in Gypsum.
