Dear Honorable Delegates of the UNSC,
Hello, this is Matthew (Seoyun) Lee, Head Chair/President of UNSC at DAEMUN V.
The Chairs would like to welcome all Delegates of the UNSC to the fifth chapter of DAEMUN V. Our cohort of Chairs comprises Matthew Lee (Head Chair), Steven Kim (Assistant Chair), and Suvin Park(Deputy Chair). The Chairs hold competent and consistent MUN experiences in both local and international realms – both as Delegates and Chairs, best prepared to best optimize the MUN experience for all. With agenda items deemed challenging, the Chairs advise the delegates, during the preparation and duration of the conference to conduct:
Complex Research: Agenda items discussed in the UNSC are often one of the most multilateral and intricate contents debated in the UN. Even a trivial, infinitesimal issue spurs conflicts of interest. Correspondingly, it is advised that Delegates conduct thorough research that puts various perspectives into a conversation. Rather than analyzing a single viewpoint and extensively discussing it, the Chairs expect that the Delegates have considered multiple viewpoints and accurately identify the strengths, limitations, and implications of each argument.
Comprehensive Documentation: Proper documentation of the complex research, the Chairs believe, is paramount to delivering such an international intricacy. Accordingly, the Chairs advise that the Delegates compose key documentation in a comprehensive manner that reflects the perspectives and implications that each delegate has considered prior to and during the conference. Such practices, indeed, allow Delegates to deliver an organized, solid argument during the live conference, where time is limited and the ambiance is tense.
Rapport and Grit: UNSC is a body of stakeholders addressing security issues. It is, hence, critical that delegates strategically devise constructive alliances or rivalries (e.g., forming a bloc and/or merging a resolution) to solidify their delegation’s representation in the Council. This process, however, may be challenging and exhaustive, for both intellectual and social abilities must be integrated. The Chairs advise that delegates are prepared to maintain their rapport and grit consistently throughout the conference – with a constructive mindset to learn and socialize.
Throughout the preparation and duration of the conference, the Chairs expect Delegates to grasp the values behind partnership and strategic collaboration. UNSC’s agenda items that require Delegates to integrate stakeholders’ perspectives and comprehend the intricacies behind them into a constructive discussion enable them to gradually obtain this skill. Beyond the conference, however, the Chairs anticipate that Delegates altogether establish an open-minded realm of the working body motivated to address issues that put the lives of the many at stake.
Again, the Chairs confer a sincere and earnest appreciation to all honorable Delegates of the UNSC for joining the fifth chapter of DAEMUN. The Chairs, even at this very moment, are cooperating to coordinate an inclusive, educational, and meaningful experience for all.
Future is now. Future forward.
Kind regards,
Matthew Lee
