Esteemed delegates,
I am Cherry Sung, a junior at Chadwick International School, and it is my utmost pleasure to serve as the President of the UN General Assembly (UNGA) at the 5th iteration of DAEMUN. My fellow chairs are Assistant President Kate Han and Deputy Assistant President Kate Kim, both sophomores at Seoul Foreign School.
The UNGA is the main policy-making organ of the UN and includes all Member States, each with an equal vote. It opens an area for multilateral debate on the various international issues covered by the Charter of the United Nations. In this conference, UNGA will be discussing the ethical use of Lethal Autonomous Weapons (L.A.W.s), equitable and inclusive access to education, and child labor in LEDCs. These three agendas tackle very different international goals but are equally important in today’s world.
DAEMUN V’s theme “Adapting to a Rapidly Changing World” is especially relevant to the UNGA, given that the committee deals with agendas from all parts of the world that affect nations disproportionately. Disarmament, human rights, and global development are issues the global community should maintain steady regulations of. My fellow chairs of the UNGA and I will ensure that DAEMUN V is a learning opportunity for all that challenges delegates to think critically like diplomats.
I look forward to seeing you all in January!
Cherry Sung
