Tier 2

Tier II-Supplemental Supports - For students who are not making progress.

  1. Begin the MTSS Problem-Solving Worksheet and Tier II and III Lesson Plan (optional) for any student not making progress.

  2. Communicate with parents by sending home the RE2 document and the Parent Letter Participation in Intervention. (Spanish).

  3. Match interventions with the academics, behavioral, or attendance needs from the Intervention Matrix or from a selected, researched-based intervention.

  4. Progress-Monitor the intervention as indicated. Istation On-demand may be administered, along with the progress-monitoring tool that accompanies the selected intervention.

  5. Document Smart Goals, the description of the intervention, and progress monitoring data on the Intervention Documentation sheet.

  6. Begin documenting information on the SLD Data Mapping Template (Open with Google Docs to fill in).


Interventions and Progress Monitoring for mClass, Istation, and other Researched-Based Interventions:

  • Interventions at Tier 2 are monitored once a month.

  • Interventions at Tier 2 are monitored after every 10 sessions.

  • Each Tier 2 intervention should last at least 8-10 instructional weeks.

  • All students enrolled in the Tier 2 intervention group have the same shared intervention need.

  • The student-teacher ratio in the group provides adequate student support: Tier 2 up to 5-10 students (school determination).

  • The intervention provides contact time adequate to the student's academic deficit. Tier 2 interventions occur a minimum of 3-5 times a week in sessions of 30 mins or more; Tier 3 interventions occur daily in sessions of 30 mins or more.

  • Tier 2 Intervention progress-monitoring outcomes will be discussed at weekly grade level and monthly MTSS meetings. These conversations should include descriptive progress, not simply, "The child is doing good."

  • Tier 2 intervention support should not take the form of unfocused ‘homework help’, test preparation, or reteaching of classroom content

  • Match interventions with the academics, behavioral, or attendance needs from the Intervention Matrix or from a selected, researched-based intervention.


  • Progress-Monitor the intervention as indicated. mCLASS/Istation On-demand may be administered, along with the progress-monitoring tool that accompanies the selected intervention.
