You are looking at a topographic map of Grand Teton mountain peak. A contour map is a 2D map used to represent a 3D space. Each contour line represents an altitude. The closer lines are to each other, the steeper the rise.
As you look at the map above, use the contour lines to predict what the landscape looks like. These are reflection questions for you and your partner to use to help you in your conversations. You don't have to write them down anywhere!
- How many meters above sea level is Grand Teton at its highest point?
- If you were to climb Grand Teton, which side (use directional language N, NE, NW, S, SE, SW...) would be the easiest to climb? Which side would be the best side for repelling?
- What is a low point near Grand Teton? What do you notice in that area?

As you visit Grand Teton, reflect on these questions with your partner to use to help you in your conversations. You don't have to write them down anywhere!
- What do you notice about the terrain on Grand Teton and the surrounding areas? Specifically look at landscape features, plant life, precipitation and water features...
- Use PEGMAN to stand on top of Grand Teton. What do you see from that vantage point?
- Exit the Photosphere by clicking the back button. Zoom out and locate Jenny Lake. Use the ruler tool to measure the perimter of Jenny Lake. How does Jenny Lake compare to Lake Erie? Which is bigger, and by how much?
