Cozy Sunset

Hanna Comeau, Grade 10

Watercolour

School: Port Colborne High School

Teacher: Ms. Sandra Palencar

Principal: Mr. Paul Taylor

Artist Statement: I chose this title because looking at the picture I imagine it looks like a comfortable surrounding.

I decided to do this style of art because I usually just do sketches, but for this big project I wanted to try and make it more interesting and more difficult for me, so I did a big painting.

I got this idea just from doing dishes I saw the sky and thought of doing a sunset painting.

From the start I was thinking of doing something peaceful with nature.

Silhouette

Megan Goulding, Grade 10

Digital Photography

School: Welland Centennial Secondary School

Teacher: Mrs. Lori Thibault

Principal: Mrs. Tammy Zonneveld

Artist Statement: I first uploaded the image of the sunset into the app Picsart then added the second image as an overlay. I then used the blend tool and swiped with the tool multiply blend. I adjusted the transparency and lastly, I enhanced the colour of the sunset, I struggled with the app at first but with some practice I was able to create really interesting blends of multiple images.

Aluminum Human

Rachael Moskalyk, Grade 11

Acrylic on Canvas 11" X 14" (inches)

School: E.L. Crossley Secondary School

Teacher: Ms. Sherry Wilkinson

Principal: Mrs. Janice Sargeant

Artist Statement:

This is a piece that I decided to do because I promised myself I would take risks with art this year. I tried to layer shades of black and white and everything in between to create a shiny 'aluminum' effect. There were many things I had to redo to create just the right effect. Over the period of time I did it, I found that it was losing it's 3d effect but I believe that is due to looking at it and paying too much attention to all the small details. My reference was a photo of a shiny statue, I instantly wanted to recreate it. I tried to look at it as shapes to make it easier for my eye to read. I am happy with the outcome and hope to do more 'shiny' looking pieces in the future.

Reversed Cocktail

Fatemeh Sadat Zolfaghari, Grade 12

Photography

School: St. Catharines Collegiate

Teacher: Ms. Cassie Randall

Principal: Mrs. Johanna Provost

Artist Statement: The reflected cocktail including Sabja seeds is both product photography and still life photography as well. I was planning to capture the subject from above, though the idea of changing the angle came to my mind and results this remarkable shot. In addition, it has no filter, so it's an original image which is taken by an Apple IPhone 11 pro with 12-megapixel rear cameras.

T is for Tommy

Zaara Nazmodin, Grade 11

Pen and Ink

School: A.N. Myer Secondary School

Teacher: Ms. Rena Burns

Principal: Mrs. Kim Carruthers

Artist Statement: My art piece is meant to depict and represent life under quarantine, with a lonely figure sitting in a brightly lit alcove and staring through a blank window. Within this area is an ornate table, a small cat, several potted and hanging plants, and a wooden chair with a sewing machine on it. Outside of the alcove are two shadowy walls lined with many clocks, some broken and all telling different times. The piece is done in black ink pen and implements hatching and cross-hatching to create values and form.

The element of design used mostly in this piece is contrast. Contrast can be seen in the way that the small alcove is bathed in light whilst the rest of the room remains dark. It can also be seen in the fact that the clock faces have very little shading compared to the walls that they sit on, making them stand out more. This use of contrast helps draw the viewer's eye to the most important parts of the piece (the alcove), as well as move it around to other areas (the clock faces on the wall). Another element that I utilized is symmetry, which can be seen in the way that the architecture on both sides of the piece more or less mirror one another. The use of symmetry creates a sense of balance within the entire drawing, and also helps emphasize the areas where symmetry is broken by other elements of the piece, like the many different clocks or the cat on the floor. The main aspect that can be improved on in this piece is value, as certain areas could have greatly benefited from being darkened which would in turn have helped further emphasize the lighter areas.

Putting it in Perspective

Jacob Petsinis, Grade 12

Pencil/Graphite on Paper

School: Beamsville District Secondary School

Teacher: Ms. Betsy Tauro & Ms. Melissa Morlacchetti

Principal: Mr. Matt Wilson

Artist Statement: In my art class we worked on human anatomy and features such as, the mouth, eyes, nose, and ears. We had to put these topics together to create a piece consisting of at least 3 people; 1 background, 1 midground, and 1 foreground. My first idea for this project was a dentist pulling a tooth out of a patient's mouth. Doing this I could show the features of the human face stretched open. I think I did the guy in front very well, showing the facial features such as the veins in his neck, and the stretch marks in his cheeks. One thing I would really like to change is the dentist on the right, his right arm is not quite accurate. In this piece I learned how to properly draw proportions of people, and draw realistic facial features such as eyes, mouth, nose, and ears.
